Masteries

Masteries represent special abilities, boons, or other beneficial effects that characters can equip. They are organized across two dimensions:

• Mastery type - Either body, mind, or soul, corresponding to the three cores.
• Mastery domain - Access to masteries in different domains are granted by the character’s archetypes.

Masteries are slotted into mastery slots. Mastery slots can only contain masteries of the corresponding type. Wildcard mastery slots can contain masteries of any type.

Body mastery slots = BODY
Mind mastery slots = MIND
Soul mastery slots = SOUL
Wildcard mastery slots = 1, +1 per full 5 character ranks

Multi-slot Masteries

Most masteries take up 1 slot. Some particularly powerful masteries cost more than 1 slot. When a mastery costs more than 1 slot:

• The slot cost must be paid entirely within a single type board - e.g., all body, all mind, all soul, or all wildcard.
• The slot cost cannot be split across boards (e.g., a 2-slot body mastery cannot pay 1 body + 1 wildcard).

Design Note: This keeps multi-slot masteries as concentrated investments. Taking a powerful mastery means dedicating an unusual share of one board to it, not stitching small contributions together.

Bonus Mastery Slots

Some archetype or equipment abilities grant you bonus mastery slots. These bonus slots will usually come with restrictions on what kind of masteries can be equipped.

Mastery Sets

Masteries may belong to mastery sets. If a character has equipped all of the masteries in a mastery set, they will also gain additional benefits provided by that mastery set.

Retraining Masteries

During downtime, players can rearrange their mastery loadouts freely. If required, the GM will work with the player on a narrative reason as to why the character’s abilities have changed.

By default, masteries in bonus mastery slots can also be retrained, unless explicitly specified, and also as long as the restrictions from the bonus mastery slots are satisfied.
