Merits
Merits are Momenta’s coarse, event-based advancement currency, awarded on objective completion. Merits accumulate across the entire mission, and are converted to ranks for character advancement.
| Ways to earn merits | Amount |
|---|---|
| Achieving a main mission objective | 2-3 merits |
| Achieving a side mission objective | 1 merit |
| Entering downtime with Momentum greater than or equal to half the party’s Max Momentum (minimum 1) | 1 merit |
| Discretionary reward for extraordinary play (GM discretion) | 1 merit |
Merits can be banked for character advancement during downtime. The number of merits needed to add one rank is based on the campaign’s difficulty level. For a standard “Heroic” campaign, it takes 5 merits / rank.
Tiers of Play
Momenta organizes 18 ranks of play (CR3 to CR20) plus open-ended Paragon play (CR21+) into four tiers of play:
| Tier of Play | Character Ranks | Party Identity | Typical Attack Pool |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novice | CR3 to CR8 | Adventuring rookies. Distinct archetype identities; modest combat tools. | 3-5 dice |
| Seasoned | CR9 to CR14 | Veterans of multiple campaigns. Builds matured; signature combos online. | 5-6 dice |
| Veteran | CR15 to CR20 | Renowned heroes. Multi-archetype mastery; legendary-tier challenges. | 6-7 dice |
| Paragon | CR21+ | Mythic figures. Open-ended progression; the system’s high-end stress test. | 7+ dice |
Design Note: The typical attack pool is design guidance targeted for each tier; it is not a specific rule or constraint for character builds.
